Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and your role as a Board Member:

Having spent more than two decades in the finance sector, I have gained experience in client relationship management, financial oversight, governance and compliance, I find that my commitment to Integrity, Respect, Service, and Excellence aligns perfectly with the core values of Toastmasters. My financial background, coupled with my fiduciary experience, enables me to provide strategic oversight that drives financial sustainability and supports the long-term goals of Toastmasters' mission, ensuring that the organization's best interest is prioritized at the Board level.

What experience do you have in strategic planning?

In my current position as Vice President, Equities & Financial Products at UOB Kay Hian Pte Ltd, I contribute to strategic planning efforts related to trading, portfolio management, client services and engagement, regulatory adherence and cross-border compliance. These experiences equip me with an understanding of strategic planning in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment. I applied these skills in my Toastmasters leadership roles, particularly when serving the district during the pandemic, to manage risks, and align actions with long-term goals.

What experience do you have in the area of finance?

My professional experience has equipped me with a robust skill set in financial management, risk assessment, and corporate governance that are crucial for overseeing an organization's financial health. Within Toastmasters, I have applied these financial skills in my leadership roles, particularly when managing resources and budgets to support club growth and district initiatives. My experience allows me to contribute to sound financial decision-making, ensuring sustainability and growth for the organization.

What experience do you have in developing policies?

In my career, I have refined my abilities to develop and implement policies that ensure legal compliance, ethical behavior, and strategic alignment. I applied these skills in my Toastmasters leadership roles by helping to develop policies in relation to membership growth, club support, and leadership development to enhance club operations, improve member engagement, and ensure effective governance. These experiences taught me to balance short-term challenges with long-term objectives, ensuring sustainable success for both individuals and the organization.

What lessons did you learn from previous leadership positions?

From my previous leadership roles, I have learned the importance of adaptability, collaboration, strategic thinking, risk management, ethical decision-making, and clear communication. At work, I have honed my skills in risk management and navigating complex situations with a clear vision. In Toastmasters, I have realized the value of setting clear goals and fostering collaboration for growth. I have also learned to manage resources effectively while engaging and motivating members.

Although our district did not achieve Distinguished status, my team and I accomplished significant milestones during the global pandemic. We focused on innovation, enhancing club quality and member experience, strategic planning, leadership development and succession. These adaptations not only helped us survive the pandemic but also laid the groundwork for a more flexible and resilient district moving forward. Additionally, I gained a deeper understanding of aligning efforts with the organizational vision, creating a shared sense of purpose and direction.

What experience and key strengths would you bring to the Board of Directors?

Throughout my career, I have continually enhanced my expertise in financial management, risk assessment, and strategic planning, cultivating skills essential for fiduciary oversight and fostering organizational growth. My leadership roles, including two terms on the Board of Directors for Toastmasters International Singapore Limited (TISL), have sharpened my governance and resource management abilities. These experiences equip me to contribute meaningfully to the Board, bringing strengths in collaboration, financial oversight, and open-mindedness to advance Toastmasters mission.

Why do you want to serve as an International Officer/Director?

I want to serve as an International Director because I am passionate about giving back to an organization that has significantly shaped my personal and professional growth. Having held various leadership roles in Toastmasters, I have seen the impact Toastmasters can have on individuals and communities. I believe I can contribute to strengthening and expanding that impact on a global scale.

My experience in strategic planning, financial management, and leadership, both within Toastmasters and my professional career, equips me with the skills needed to drive sustainable growth, support clubs, and empower members. I am committed to helping Toastmasters thrive by developing policies that foster member engagement, club excellence, and long-term sustainability. Serving as an International Director allows me to help the organization continue to grow and evolve while staying true to its mission.

What volunteer experience do you have outside of Toastmasters?

Outside of Toastmasters, my volunteer experience includes serving as the Organizing Chair for the National University of Singapore Chinese Orchestra (NUSCO) Annual Concert featuring the world-renowned violinist Dr. L Subramaniam in a double concerto. In this role, I managed event planning, logistics, and team coordination, which required strong leadership and organizational skills. Additionally, I volunteered as an emcee for community events, enhancing my public speaking and engagement skills.

Have you worked with other Boards of Directors outside of Toastmasters? If so, describe your experience.

My work, which involves regular collaboration with senior leadership and decision-makers from both public listed and private companies, has granted me valuable insights into financial policies, risk management, and long-term growth strategies, all of which are key aspects of board governance. These experiences have equipped me with the strategic mindset and leadership skills necessary to contribute effectively to the Board, even without direct board experience.

In your opinion, what are Toastmasters International’s major objectives and how would you work to achieve them?

In my opinion, Toastmasters International's major objectives are centered on member empowerment, organizational growth, global presence, and upholding core values. My experience in finance, strategic planning, and leadership, both within and outside of Toastmasters, reiterate the need for the Board to continue working on developing and implementing policies towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for the organization.

I would collaborate with my fellow Board Members to develop policies and initiatives that support our strategic objectives, particularly focusing on financial sustainability and sustainable membership growth. These efforts are crucial for the ongoing development of Toastmasters International. By aligning our initiatives with Toastmasters' core mission, I aim to create a positive and lasting impact alongside my colleagues on the Board.
